“It’s not human,” Laurel said as we sat on her porch and listened to the rumble of the surf. “Maybe it’s a demon, though I couldn’t say because I’ve never encountered one before. I didn’t believe they really existed, to tell the truth. Sure, I’m all-in with the supernatural, but I thought demons were just metaphors.”

“Did you see it?” I asked. We’d been on the porch for twenty minutes, and I’d been waiting for her to bring up what had happened, because I didn’t want to ask.

“No, I didn’t see it. I saw only darkness until there was fire coming at us. But I felt like the demon was inside my head. Violating me.”

“That raises the possibility,” I said, “that Monique Simpson was not killed by a human, but by this demon—or whatever it is.”

“It did say, ‘my dagger.’”

“Maybe it needs the dagger to be able to kill. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be around right now.”

“It’s interesting that it’s clinging to the empty case,” Laurel said. “Why isn’t it with the dagger?”

“The police have the dagger now. Maybe the demon is in the evidence room with the dagger, as well as with the case. Who says a demon can’t be in two places at once?”

“I think it’s time to give the case to the police. We can’t get anything else from it. To be honest, I don’t want to try.”

“Me neither,” I said. “We’re done with it. But before we write this off, let’s brainstorm for a moment. Is there any way the dagger connects with The Truth Squad?”

“I don’t see how, other than the fact Mrs. Simpson had access to it. Her husband tried to keep it secret from her.”

“But she knew about it and that he had gotten it illicitly. She was thinking that when she opened the case. She didn’t just find it in his drawer by accident.”

Laurel shrugged.

“Remember,” I said, “when I read the handle of the pike the killer tried to use against James, his thoughts suggested he was influenced by some entity.”

“Are you saying it’s the same entity we just dealt with?”

“It’s worth considering. But I can’t make sense of the connection.”
